The Albany State University baseball had its 5-game winning streak halted with a 12-6 defeat to Flagler College.
The Saints offense got right to work in the top of the first when Donovan Garcia’s sacrifice fly to center field brought home Mason Gray to put Flagler up 1-0. The Golden Rams responded in the bottom of the inning. Lavoisier Fisher walked to get things going and then stole second to put himself in scoring position. Fisher would be driven home on a double from Lachlan Ross that tied that game at 1. A sac fly later in the inning would put the Rams in front 2-1.
Tyler Keith’s solo homer in the top of the second re-squared things at 2.
Albany State jumped back in front 3-2 on TJ Thomas’ RBI double in the bottom half of the second.
The Saints wasted no time responding, reclaiming the less on a pair of RBI doubles from Gray and Thomas, putting Flagler back up 4-3.
Flager blew the game open with five runs in the fifth. Newland and Gray were both beaned putting them on base. Stolen bases by both runners put them on second and third, which allowed Newland to score on an error to make the count 5-3. Like Welborn’s two-run double plated Garcia and Gray to bring the score to 7-3. John Fiorenza’s double drove in Welborn, putting the Saints up 8-3. Fiorenza scored shortly thereafter on a wild pitch, for Flagler’s fifth run of the inning, making the score 9-3.
Flager scored one run in the top of the sixth, pushed their advantage to seven runs at 10-3.
Albany State scored two more in the bottom of the sixth on a fielder’s choice and Ross single.
Fiorenza left the yard in the top of the seventh, putting the Saints up 11-5. Nicholas Hernandez’s solo shot in the bottom of the seventh, drew Albany State within five at 11-6, but that’s as close the Golden Rams would come. Flager added one more run in the top of the ninth, closing out the scoring at 12-6.
Next up for Albany State is a three-game set with Spring Hill College March 18-19. March 19 is Little League Day; any little leaguer in uniform gets free admission into the game.
